Our beloved ones, the lords of the tribe,

have abandoned a lover after their union; my eye—

And from afar, since their caravan turned away,

their fire flashed as night deepened—

night; the camel driver tired, and the guide lost his way.

Come with me, lover of theirs; come toward them!

Do not disguise them as Zaynab, nor as May—

Their fire appeared within my breast and seared me—

I gazed at it, my thoughts sick from separa—

tion, and my eyes' gaze dim.

My mind goes mad for them when night falls,

and my breast yearns whenever it remembers.

Would that I knew how, and where, to find forgetfulness,

when my heart is the tormented heart

and my passion is that strange, intrusive passion.

Being despoiled in love for the beauty pleased me,

and I lifted the veil from my heart's eye.

Do not blame me, friend; I have met my end.

Then I faced her and said to my companions:

This fire is Layla's fire; turn toward it.

For her sake I love the fair one,

and my heart loves her graceful figure.

    فرموا نحوها لحاظاً صحيحا

    My people cried out and tried to judge the matter;

they cast toward her sound glances—

glances that came back rebuffed, though clear-sighted.

Would that they had stopped short and not presumed so far,

though they swore they would draw near.

    They sought her, but their hopes failed;

then they turned to blame and said:

Was what you saw a deceptive gleam or a vision?

Do you know? She knows my condition.

Alas for the blamers; they laid blame upon her,

then obscured her for me with their disguises.

I shunned them and inclined toward her,

with passion as my mount and longing as my companion.

    My ending in love for Alwa became a beginning;

I drew close enough to hear, indeed to see.

Then I came near while others receded,

and with me came a companion following the tra—

ces; love makes intrusion its condition.

We drank the wine of the jar in love for her,

and the lovely cupbearer favored us with it.

Then we came, and the heart yearned with longing.

She rose higher while we drew nearer, until

intervening ruins stood between us and her.

    The heart's desire rose high in beauty;

we inclined toward her in rapture, and she inclined.

    We sought her ruins when they stretched before us;

we neared the ruins, but there intervened

sighs and a burning thirst between us and her.

Her dwellings have grown distant, and prostrate

am I, my eyelid sore with tears.

Yet since I came, my passion has remained sound.

I asked, 'Who is in the dwellings?' They said, 'A wounded one,

a bound captive, and one slain.'

Salma's dwelling: no one coarse ever entered it

    without being made gentle.

When I arrived, they said to me, 'O noble one,

what have you come seeking?' I said, 'A guest

has come seeking hospitality; where may he stay?'

Ah, Salma! She honors some and humbles others,

and the captive of love sees heat in the cold—

I came to her, impoverished by the passing of all else.

    She welcomed me: 'Come, tether

your mount; a guest has no departure from us.'

Our love brings honor and loftiness from her,

and all perfections and glories come from her.

Do not aim to grasp us; what you seek has no fathomable essence.

Whoever comes to us lays down the staff of travel.

I said, 'Who will bring me to her, and where is the way?'

Longing urged us through deserts of blame

toward love's dwellings and the joy of a day.

Then we traveled, shaking off the traces of sleep,

and came down among the dwellings of people

whom wine felled before they even tasted it.

My heart has the fullest share of love,

and passion has brought down both soul and body.

    Of my drinking companions, only a name remains;

ecstasy has erased every trace of them.

It is a trace, and the people dwell within it.

My heart cannot break away from passion.

So end your blame, friend, wherever it has settled.

    Passion has crushed these people's mountain;

some of them have vanished, leaving no room for com—

plaint or for tears to find repose.

Beware the dwelling of the beauties:

its very nature is to strip lovers bare.

How many lovers I knew there

of whom only breaths could tell,

though he himself was free and apart even from them.

The blamers' pillar shook at my infatuation,

and my friends' patience in love cried out.

You see among them one cast down, still insistent,

and among the people one who points to a tra—

ce of ecstasy of which little remains.

I love gazing eyes and a graceful figure:

I see that figure as a spear, those eyes as arrows.

I have become a guide to lovers,

and I have seen a station for each of them

whose explanation in a book would take too long.

Leave off blame, you reproachers, alas for you!

Grant me, my masters, what you possess.

    قلت أهل الهوى سلامٌ عليكمْ

    I sent you a letter;

I said, 'People of love, peace be upon you.

I have a heart occupied with love for you.'

I smell Layla's fragrance on the breezes,

and my heart frets with growing love.

My ribs are distressed by so much longing,

    and eyelids, wounded by tea—

rs, send torrents swiftly toward meeting you.

There is no denial of truth, dear friend.

May your passion endure safely; do you have passion?

O noble ones, a grave encloses those opposed to you.

An event of longing has never ceased to drive

me toward you, while events keep changing.

    My tears flowed as blood, thinner than water;

my tale spread more widely than all that has spread.

I was lost, and affection among my people was more lost still.

My excuse is itself a fault; will one who kno—

ws my excuse accept my leaving excuses aside?

That sacred precinct and that place—

its flashes of lightning snatched me away.

Guardians of the precinct, grant me safety, safety!

I came to warm myself; is there a way to your fi—

    re this morning?

My dear ones are the people of love; trust them.

I have found fidelity with them,

and I hoped to ask these generous ones.

every blade raised against her is blunted.

    This radiance and this gleam

belong to Sulayma; take the road to her.

When the world shows its adornments,

do not let the elegant gar—

Her love is precious, highly valued among the people.

She is Salma; none but a believer knows her.

How many came to her unawares of

her, seeking something, only to find access hard!

They thought her water would quench their thirst,

but they melted away and were utterly undone.

Then, when she showed them signs,

they stood staring until at last

the bright brow and white markings of union appeared.

On love's Arafat there is tumult and clamor.

and the banner of fidelity appears in the hand of ec—

stasy, and the people of truths call, 'Roam!'

Where is the one who used to claim us? For this

is the day when the color of claims changes.

We are a people whose station is set apart in the heights,

and we are mentioned in the firm Revelation.

A company through whom guidance comes whenever recounted,

they charged like mighty stallions; only stallions are stri—

cken on the day of encounter.

often they sacrificed in war against their foes.

Then, when separation pressed hard upon them,

they gave freely of themselves when union was scarce,

and the gift was reckoned small.

They are masters who demolished the fortress of the ego.

What state in battle did they not know?

    They entered the fray to bring it to an end;

then they vanished after plunging into it

amid its waves, as floods came.

Then, when a shadow of it fell upon them,

it hurled them back among outward forms, each one's

    blood spilled among their ruins.

The people made plain to me what their thought had sensed:

it burns the ignorant hand that touches it.

Then they said to everyone who seeks to touch it:

Her state was exalted, and all were enamored of her.

The utmost share is what the ga—

ze carries away from her, and few attain even that.

She is an essence that has clothed us as a garment,

and through us, as source and foundation, has flourished.

Then, O reason, once you abandoned analogy,

someone you knew came to her seeking a spark,

    possessing ease, wishes, and desires.

She drove him away from loving her and recoiled,

and shook at him the spear of her stature.

found her beyond likeness, too exalted

to draw near to him, though he was a messenger.

    She took us, bound and captive;

    anguish stayed, and patience departed.

Dear friend, we used to vie for her,

    كلُّ عزمٍ من دونها مخذول

    then stood bewildered, as you knew us;

every resolve falls helpless before her.

    She consoled us with what the diversions suggested;

we heard from them, not knowing what they were.

Then we left, our thoughts distracted by longing,

passing time with hope; let that suffice—

how many a heart feeds upon such consolation!

O fellow sufferer, who will help an enthralled lover

caught between growing longing and scant patience?

Alas for my heart in love with a winsome gazelle!

Whenever it tastes a bitter cup of despair,

a honeyed cup of hope arrives.

within him longing glowed like embers.

Whenever his soul tempted him toward some act,

he was turned from it and told, 'Beautiful patience.'

We are within the sanctuary, while others are outside its bounds.

Go in peace, and speak less of blaming us.

And if you are asked, dear friend,

this is our condition, and knowle—

dge has not reached it; every condition changes.
