O my honor, that He knows me,

And that, in the unseen, through me He spoke to me!

And He said to me, “Be,” while I heard Him.

And only by His grace did He make me hear.

And here I am, realizing all of this,

For through my nonexistence He brought me to realization.

O my honor, O my honor, O my honor!

God, my Lord, the Real, has indeed honored me.

So here I am, nonexistent in His knowledge.

And in His speech He likewise made this known to me.

It suffices me that I am His knowledge encompassing me,

And that I am His tender, freshly gathered speech.

And He is true Being; there is no form

Of Him within it, nor am I firmly established.

And there has been none but Him in it since the time

Of all that appeared from Him in time.

Nor am I He—God; far be it from me to

Say this in secret or in public.

For I am I in my own view and in yours,

While in His view there is nothing, lofty or lowly.

God is my Lord; in His view there is none but Him,

Not in ours—so understand it as the discerning do.

For this reason He sent down His speech,

With His knowledge, to whoever attends to this.

And God is knowledge and speech from eternity.

And He is our letters, for the sake of trials.

And everyone who knows what I have said

Is indeed, like me, grounded in certainty.

And whoever is ignorant of this, surely he

Knows neither God nor Abd al-Ghani.
