ممنfrom the one who معيwith me لاnot زالceased يظهرappears بالقوىthrough the faculties
O humankind, my heart's thirst remains unquenched
O wilderness, my heart is not sated
by the one who is with me, ever manifest through the faculties.
By those with me who still appear strong
وأناand I الذيthe one who أشكوI lament المحبةlove والجوىand burning anguish
وأمرand the bitterest ماwhat لاقيتُI encountered منof ألمpain النوىseparation
And I am the one who laments love and burning anguish;
Yet I complain of love and ardour
and the bitterest pain of separation I have suffered
And the pain of longing I have borne
قربnearness الحبيبthe beloved وماyet no إليهto him وصولُreaching
يدنوhe draws near فأحسبso I suppose أنهthat he is أنيI myself وماyet not
is the beloved's nearness, yet no way to reach him.
The beloved is near, but no reaching Him
He draws near, so I think that he is I—yet
He comes close, and I think it is Him
هوit غيرother than قربnearness والجهولand the ignorant one لهfor him العمىblindness
فاعجبso marvel لنورat a light فيهin it كونيmy being أظلماgrew dark
it is nothing but nearness, and blindness belongs to the ignorant.
But it's just nearness, the blind are confused
So marvel at a light in which my being grew dark,
Amazing, that in His light I am darkened

like pale camels in the desert, killed by thirst,
Like one dying of thirst in the desert
while water is carried upon their backs.
With water above it, out of reach
