    O dwellers of the East, because of you were choked

    My eyes with tears when they glimpsed the lightning's gleam.

    So accept my excuse among you, for the beginning

    Of my passion for you came by the nearest of paths.

    And that was only because I had been heedless,

    Thinking my wall gave no warning of a breach.

    بها نشأتي خضراء طيبة العرق

    Then an eastern, Qadiri hand was extended;

    Through it my growth is green, wholesome at the root.

    بكم أنني في الجمع من غير ما فرق

    So I said to the people of the West: do not reproach me;

    It is through you that I am in union, without any separation.

    Through you I rose to the summit of exaltation, and there sang

    To your melodies within the heart, a cooing gray dove.

    Ah, pardon the lover's eye, for it

    Saw the lightning in the East, and so yearned for the East.
