My heart is filled with longings and ardent love.
My heart is filled with passion and youthful folly,
And the arduous matter has become intractable and perplexing for me.
And I am afflicted with the most difficult and complex matter.
فياso, O منone who تمادتpersisted فيin التجنبshunning والقلىand aversion
إذاwhen قلتI said أهدىbestowed الهجرestrangement ليon me حللrobes البلىdecay
So, O you who persist in shunning and aversion,
O you who persist in avoidance and aloofness,
When I say, “Estrangement has bestowed on me robes of decay,”
If I say separation has granted me the garments of affliction,
تقولينyou say لولاwere it not for الهجرestrangement لمnot يطبbe sweet الحبlove

You say, “Were it not for estrangement, love would not be sweet.”
You say, "Without separation, love would not flourish."
I have lost my endurance between your nearness and separation.
You made me lose my patience between being near you and yearning.

تحيرتُI became bewildered إنif قلتI said ارفقيbe gentle حثنيspurred me on الهوىpassion
And yearning has grown intense in my entrails, where it dwells.
And passion has settled and found refuge in my heart.
I am bewildered: if I say, “Be gentle,” passion spurs me on.
I am confused if I say, "Be gentle," for desire urges me on,

And if I say, “This heart has been burned by love's anguish,”
And if I say, "This heart is burning with passion,"
You say, “Through the fires of love's anguish the heart is ennobled.”
You say, "The fires of passion bring honor to the heart."
رويدكgo gently ياO منone who بالتجافيwith aloofness أمتَّنيyou killed me
وأهملتَand you neglected فيماregarding what بالوصالof union وعدتنيyou promised me
Gently, O you who have killed me with aloofness,
Gently, O you who have wearied me with your coldness,
And neglected what you promised me of union,
And neglected your promise to unite with me.
إذاwhen قلتI said رفقاًbe gentle إننيindeed I ذبتُI melted away زدتنيyou added to my suffering
وإنand if قلتI said ماwhat ذنبيmy sin إليكagainst you أجبتنيyou answered me
When I say, “Be gentle; I have melted away,” you add to my suffering.
If I say, "Gently, I am melting away," you increase my burden,
And if I say, “What is my sin against you?” you answer me:
And if I say, "What is my crime toward you?" you answer me:
وجودكyour existence ذنبٌa sin لاnot يقاسis compared بهwith it ذنبُa sin
“Your existence is a sin with which no sin compares.”
"Your very existence is a crime that has no equal."
