May I be your ransom, O You who were hidden, then shone forth,

and my longing for Him remains felicity.

And no wonder if I took flight on seeing Him,

for it is through His kindness that I found a wing.

And when a face of His appeared from behind creation,

I saw all created beings as beautiful.

Blessed are You, a secret hidden from all else,

who openly permitted us to meet Him—permitted it.

He says to a thing, "Be!"—yet the thing is none other than He,

when it comes to be; yet You are veiled, and it stands revealed.

And the coloring of things is nothing but His modes,

through them He manifests Himself to creatures face to face.

Exalted are You, O giver of His wine to hearts,

through beholding a face of His, the moment it shone forth.

If indeed the created worlds are darkness to people,

then, to me, You have indeed appeared as morning.

And the sun of the Essence's heaven appeared from You to us,

and the garden of self-manifestation wafted fragrance from Your attributes.

He is the All, save that the onslaught of His action

is a veil for Him, giving creation wine to drink.

So the possessors of intellect grow drunk and see nothing

except what imagination has made available to them from themselves.

And beauty is nothing but a follower of intellect,

which sees what it sees as a grasp and a release.

Behold, O One unique in Essence, You are our existence,

and we are nothing but the decree granted by You:

lines traced in imagination with the pens of intellect,

which issued forth intact from the Highest Pen.

And the Highest Pen is nothing but a will's

manifestation—an issuing forth as it rose, and a departure:

a will of the unseen, from a sacred station—

in whose desert the understanding of one who affirms transcendence roamed—

    فليس لنا فيها الكلام مباحا

    of ancient standing, while all else is newly created;

so speech concerning it is not permitted to us.
