تستر الروح تحت طي الجلود

Indeed, unbelief has a darkness in existence,

Ignorance casts darkness over existence,

That veils the spirit beneath the folds of skin.

Concealing the soul beneath animal hides.

وهو عين السوى وللنور نار

وهو عين السوى وللنور نار

هي في النشأتين ذات الوقود

هي في النشأتين ذات الوقود

And it is otherness itself, and the light has a fire

It is the antithesis of equality, yet fire fuels light

That has fuel in both states of existence.

In both creations, providing the fuel.

فلهذا ترى الكثائف فيه

فلهذا ترى الكثائف فيه

آذنت يوم بعدها بالخلود

آذنت يوم بعدها بالخلود

Thus you see that the dense bodies within it

Thus you see dense bodies therein

Have proclaimed eternity on the day of their remoteness.

Proclaimed everlasting after their day.

كل علو له من الكفر سفل

كل علو له من الكفر سفل

ضم موجوده إلى المفقود

ضم موجوده إلى المفقود

Every elevation it has through unbelief is lowliness

Every lofty ignorance has a lowly abyss -

That has joined its existent being to the nonexistent.

Its existence added to the nonexistent.

ويح قوم باعوا نهارات قرب

ويح قوم باعوا نهارات قرب

بليال من شدة البعد سود

بليال من شدة البعد سود

Woe to a people who sold days of nearness

Woe to a people who sold days of nearness

For nights black from the intensity of remoteness.

For nights of remoteness and blackness.

ثم أعمالهم بدت كسراب

ثم أعمالهم بدت كسراب

حسبوه المياه في الأخدود

حسبوه المياه في الأخدود

Then their deeds appeared like a mirage:

Then their deeds seemed like mirages -

They took it for water in the trench.

They thought it was water in the valley.

ثم لما أتوه لم يجدوه

ثم لما أتوه لم يجدوه

ودهتهم جهالة المطرود

ودهتهم جهالة المطرود

Then, when they came to it, they did not find it,

But when they reached it they found nothing,

And the outcast's ignorance overwhelmed them.

And the folly of the exiled confounded them.

ورمتهم سماؤهم بشهاب

ورمتهم سماؤهم بشهاب

فرأوا النار تحت ظل العمود

فرأوا النار تحت ظل العمود

And their sky hurled a meteor at them,

Their heavens pelted them with flaming meteors,

So they saw the fire beneath the pillar's shadow.

And they saw fire beneath the shadow of columns.
