    Indeed, sovereignty and leadership,

in the wretched and in the blessed,

are two robes of the Lord who

is called by the names of the servants.

The wretched one has indeed laid claim to both

    through his obstinate mind's contention.

So his contention is blameworthy, not

that from which there is no escape.

And with the blessed one, both have indeed

been ascribed to the Glorious Lord.

in the realm of the new universe.

And the secret within him is that

he has vanished from the heart of the poem—

not that his attribute has vanished from him

while he remains, as in the seeker's states.

Indeed, the sought one is the seeker

when he encompasses the Unique One's decree,

    and walks backward toward Him,

    and sees creation from afar.

And all the distances of what is other

are nearness to Him who has the sole command.

And nearness is what already was in

beginningless eternity, in the enduring state.

And illusion has vanished, and was not

    previously in the dullard's understanding.

And the affair is a single affair,

    but with manifold repetition.

And nearness is the nearness of the Essence, and

it is the root, not the nearness of the jugular vein.

Indeed, the jugular vein (warīd) derives from arrival (wurūd),

and your arrival is of no benefit.

from whoever seeks union with graceful maidens,

not from their unmarriageable kin, for they

are of their own, like newborn children.
