إن ذلي في حب علوة عزُّ

إن ذلي في حب علوة عزُّ

فالطفوا في المنام أو فاستفزوا

فالطفوا في المنام أو فاستفزوا

Indeed, my abasement in loving ʿAlwa is honor.

So be gentle in dreams, or else rouse me.

يا نفوساً بالجهل منتكسات

يا نفوساً بالجهل منتكسات

يعتريها إن شمَّت الحق وخز

يعتريها إن شمَّت الحق وخز

O souls overturned by ignorance,

A sting assails them if they scent the Truth.

اخسئي لا تجاوزي قدْرَ وهمٍ

اخسئي لا تجاوزي قدْرَ وهمٍ

هو طرزٌ والفهم في الله طرز

هو طرزٌ والفهم في الله طرز

Begone! Do not exceed the measure of an illusion.

It is a mode, and understanding of God is a mode.

نظرت بالعيون منا سعاد

نظرت بالعيون منا سعاد

فسواها نفوسنا تشمئز

فسواها نفوسنا تشمئز

Suʿad gazed through our eyes,

So our souls recoil from all but her.

وحَّدُوها في غيبها وعجيب

وحَّدُوها في غيبها وعجيب

أشركوا حين أقبلت تهتز

أشركوا حين أقبلت تهتز

They affirmed her oneness in her unseen state—and, strangely,

They ascribed partners to her when she approached, swaying.

إن جسمي هو الجدار عليها

إن جسمي هو الجدار عليها

وهو منها وتحته هي كنز

وهو منها وتحته هي كنز

Indeed, my body is the wall over her.

And it is from her; beneath it, she is a treasure.

ظهرت بالقدود منعطفات

ظهرت بالقدود منعطفات

وعيون فيهن للسحر رمز

وعيون فيهن للسحر رمز

She appeared in swaying figures,

And in eyes that hold a sign of enchantment.

وغرامي على هواها غرامي

وغرامي على هواها غرامي

ما اعتراني عيٌّ ولا حل عجز

ما اعتراني عيٌّ ولا حل عجز

And my passion for loving her is my passion.

No faltering of speech has afflicted me, nor has helplessness taken hold.

لا تقل أنك المروع منها

لا تقل أنك المروع منها

هي أمن للخائفين وحرز

هي أمن للخائفين وحرز

Do not say that you are terrified by her.

She is safety for the fearful, and a refuge.

ولها من ذواتنا إيماء

ولها من ذواتنا إيماء

ولها بالعقول منا غمز

ولها بالعقول منا غمز

And from our very selves comes a gesture toward her.

And through our minds, from us, comes a wink toward her.

ألف الحق في الغيوب استقامت

ألف الحق في الغيوب استقامت

وهي في الكون بالتحرك همز

وهي في الكون بالتحرك همز

The alif of the Truth stood upright in the unseen realms.

And in the cosmos, through motion, it is a hamza.
