Indeed, I am good and evil.

Indeed, I am falsehood and truth.

I am lies and truth

إنني علم وجهل

وثبوت بل ومحق

Indeed, I am knowledge and ignorance.

And permanence—nay, annihilation too.

Certitude, even obliteration

وأنا الشمس وللشم

س أنا غرب وشرق

And I am the sun; and for the sun—

I am the sun, and for the sun,

—I am west and east.

وتباهى بي زماني

وتباهى بي زماني

وتسامت بي دمشق

وتسامت بي دمشق

And my age took pride in me,

My time boasts of me

And Damascus rose high through me.

And Damascus is exalted through me

وعلى أهل زماني

وعلى أهل زماني

كلِّهم سرِّي يدق

كلِّهم سرِّي يدق

And to the people of my age—

And over the people of my time

All of them—my secret is too subtle to grasp.

My secret knocks, all of them

إن حقي باطل بل

إن حقي باطل بل

باطلي عنديَ حق

باطلي عنديَ حق

Indeed, my truth is falsehood; rather,

Indeed my truth is falsehood, but

My falsehood, in my view, is truth.

My falsehood to me is truth

وتأمل أنني عن

وتأمل أنني عن

نور ذاك الغيب برق

نور ذاك الغيب برق

And consider that I, from

And contemplate that I am lightning

The light of that Unseen, am a lightning flash.

From that unseen light

ولحساديَ مني

ولحساديَ مني

دائماً قتل وحرق

دائماً قتل وحرق

And for my enviers, from me,

Come killing and burning, always.

وأنا السيف الذي لا

يُنتَضى إلا يشق

And I am the sword that is never

And I am the sword that cannot

Drawn without cleaving.

Be sheathed except to rend

دع ضفادعْ أرضنا في

دع ضفادعْ أرضنا في

آجن الماء تنق

آجن الماء تنق

Leave the frogs of our land in

Let the frogs of our land croak

Stagnant water, croaking.

In the stagnant water

وكلاب الحي قد أو

وكلاب الحي قد أو

جعها الليث المشق

جعها الليث المشق

And the neighborhood's dogs have already—

And the dogs of the alley, whom

—been hurt by the lithe lion.

The lion made restless, whine

فتسلت بنباح

فتسلت بنباح

غيره لا تستحق

غيره لا تستحق

So they consoled themselves with barking;

So they consoled themselves with the barking

They deserve nothing else.

Of others not worthy

وعلى الجملة ما ثم

وعلى الجملة ما ثم

م سوى الحق محق

م سوى الحق محق

And, in sum, there is none—

And in summary, nothing exists

—in the right except the Real.

Except the truth, the obliterator
