1. إن كنت نائمْ

    فالله قائمْ

    If you are asleep,

    then God is ever watchful.

  2. أو كنت فاني

    فالحق دائم

    Or if you are vanishing,

    then the Real is everlasting.

  3. حبيب قلبي

    رفقاً بهائم

    Beloved of my heart,

    be gentle with one love-distraught.

  4. من فيك حاروا

    فهم بهائم

    Those who are bewildered about you

    are beasts.

  5. وكيف تخفى

    على الملائم

    And how can you be hidden

    from the one attuned to you?

  6. وفيك هامت

    أُولُوا العزائم

    And in you are lost in love

    those of firm resolve.

  7. ومنك زادت

    لهم غنائم

    And from you have multiplied

    the spoils they gain.

  8. وفي الهوى أن

    فقت كرائم

    And in love were

    precious treasures spent.

  9. وأنت روض

    وهم نسائم

    And you are a garden,

    and they are breezes.

  10. وأنت غصن

    وهم حمائم

    And you are a branch,

    and they are doves.

  11. وأنت شمس

    وهم غمائم

    And you are a sun,

    and they are clouds.

  12. بلا رؤس

    لهم عمائم

    Without heads,

    they have turbans.

  13. وكل صب

    لقاك رائم

    And every lovesick soul

    seeks to meet you.

  14. وكل طرف

    عليك حائم

    And every gaze

    hovers over you.

  15. وكل حب

    له علائم

    And every love

    has its signs.

  16. ومنه لا تن

    فع التمائم

    And against it, no

    amulets avail.

  17. والقلب ممن

    سواه صائم

    And the heart, from anyone

    but him, is fasting.

  18. فليس يصغى

    إلى اللوائم

    So it does not listen

    to the reproachers.

  19. وفي بحار ال

    غرام عائم

    And in the seas of

    passion, it swims.

  20. وبرق ذات ال

    مليح شائم

    And the lightning of the essence of the

    beautiful one it watches.

  21. يمشي ولكن

    بلا قوائم

    It walks, but

    without legs.

  22. وجوده قد

    محا الجرائم

    Its existence has indeed

    erased transgressions.

  23. ولطفه لل

    صبا يلائم

    And its gentleness, with the

    east wind, harmonizes.

  24. وتارة يش

    به السمائم

    And at times it is

    like the scorching winds.

  25. والغير في أر

    ضه نعائم

    And others in its

    land are ostriches.

  26. وهو الربا وال

    ورى سوائم

    And it is the uplands, while

    all creatures are grazing beasts.
