    If my whole being always resembles lightning,

    then tell me here: who endures, and who remains?

    فما بال أقوامي يسمونني خلقا

    And the one who remains is none but God alone;

    so why do my people call me a created being?

    I arose anew from an eternal command, and indeed

    I am the imagined, newly arisen being and the phantom cast forth.

    ونفسي وجسمي تصحب الجمع والفرقا

    And my intellect and my spirit are degrees of existence;

    and my soul and my body accompany union and separation.

    I am the sun in the attribute of perfection; all else

    is only shadow; so be certain of my precedence over it.

    ودع عنك مني الغرب واستقبل الشرقا

    And if you desire me, know all my stations;

    and leave my west behind you, and face the east.

    And spirits never cease to soar through my aspiration,

    and the secret of the unseen's manifestations ever ascends through me.

    Ours is the Presence of nearness on the sanctuary's right side,

    and in the depths of the Names, ours is the submerged pearl.

    She is the Essence, exalted above dhāl and alif

    and tāʾ; so letters know no path of ascent to her.

    And the structures of her action have fallen short of her,

    and her absoluteness entails sundering and joining.

    فأيانَ ما وليتُ أشهدُها تِلْقا

    She is the name, and she the mark and the form for all creation;

    so whenever I turn, I behold her face-to-face.

    She is the highest canopy; she is the plane that

    is entitled to the claim; she is the firmest handhold.

    فلا بدع إن ذاب الأنام بها عشقا

    She is loveliness in countenance and beauty in reality;

    so no wonder if all creatures melt in passionate love for her.

    When she veils herself, we die; we live when she appears.

    And if she goes too far in estrangement, we say to her, "Be gentle!"

    My heart is lost in love for her when the east wind blows,

    and I grow drunk with longing whenever the gray dove sings.

    She is of the Hijaz and of al-Sham, with a countenance

    that is exalted; whoever sees her neither goes astray nor suffers.

    We prostrated ourselves to ourselves, while she bows to us,

    with a seeker's inclination, deeply inhaling our fragrance.

    And there is no love but love of her for a lover

    of hers; his lie about anything other than her has always been truth.

    Being, the degrees of whose Essence arose through her,

    for His Names, by the command, pouring forth in full flow,

    فسحقاً لعبد ليس يعرفه سحقا

    is exalted above all those degrees;

    so perdition to a servant who does not know Him—perdition!
