لأعتقه لما بلغت الثمانينا

I wished for a slave of my own, eighty years old,

I wished for a slave, eighty years old

To free him when I reached eighty.

فما وجدوا في الناس من عمرُهُ كذا

فما وجدوا في الناس من عمرُهُ كذا

ولم يك معتوقاً فحيرتهم فينا

ولم يك معتوقاً فحيرتهم فينا

But among the people they found no one of that age

But they did not find anyone among the people whose age was that

Who had not been freed; so I left them puzzled about us.

And he would not have been freed, so they were perplexed about us

وقالوا إله الخلق أكرمُ معتقٍ

وقالوا إله الخلق أكرمُ معتقٍ

لعبد له في العمر شيءٌ وتسعونا

لعبد له في العمر شيءٌ وتسعونا

And they said: The God of creation is the most generous liberator

And they said, "The Lord of creation honors every freed

Of a servant ninety-odd years of age.

Slave who has something in age over ninety"

فماذا تظن الله يفعل بعد ذا

فماذا تظن الله يفعل بعد ذا

بعبد رقيق يخدم الشرع والدينا

With a bondsman who serves the sacred law and religion?

With a servile slave who serves Islamic law and religion

فأفرحني ظني به أنه الذي

فأفرحني ظني به أنه الذي

من النار في يوم القيامة ينجينا

So my belief in Him gladdened me—that He is the One

So my guess about Him makes me happy that He is the one
