قيل لي كن مع الأنام وداري

كلَّ شخصٍ فقلت ما الذلُّ قدري

كلَّ شخصٍ فقلت ما الذلُّ قدري

I was told: “Be among people and humor

They told me, go with the people and take care

every person.” I said: “Humiliation is not my station.”

Of every person, so I said, humiliation is not my fate

أنا عبد الغني لا عبد زيدٍ

أنا عبد الغني لا عبد زيدٍ

من جميع الورى ولا عبد عمرو

من جميع الورى ولا عبد عمرو

I am the servant of the All-Sufficient, not the servant of Zayd

I am a servant of the Rich One, not a servant of Zayd

among all humankind, nor the servant of Amr.

Nor a servant of Amr or the rest of mankind
