وطعم الجفا مرٌّ وطعم الوفا حلوُ

I am the forgetful lover of your face, O ʿUlw;

And estrangement tastes bitter, while fidelity tastes sweet.

جمعت بها الأضداد من كل حالة

جمعت بها الأضداد من كل حالة

فميت وحيٌّ ثم معْ يقظةٍ سهوُ

فميت وحيٌّ ثم معْ يقظةٍ سهوُ

Through her I gathered the opposites of every state:

Thus dead and alive; then, with wakefulness, heedlessness.

وإني أنا الموجود عنها بها لها

وإني أنا الموجود عنها بها لها

وما أنا موجود وما لغتي لغو

وما أنا موجود وما لغتي لغو

And I am the one who exists from her, through her, for her;

Yet I do not exist, and my speech is no idle talk.

وسكر ولاسكر إذا ما شهدتها

وسكر ولاسكر إذا ما شهدتها

وإن حجبت عني فصحو ولا صحو

وإن حجبت عني فصحو ولا صحو

Intoxication, yet no intoxication, when I behold her;

And if she is veiled from me, sobriety, yet no sobriety.

وسير ولا سير وكشف وغفلة

وسير ولا سير وكشف وغفلة

وعلم ولا علم وشجو ولا شجو

وعلم ولا علم وشجو ولا شجو

And journeying, yet no journeying; unveiling and heedlessness;

And knowledge, yet no knowledge; sorrow, yet no sorrow.

تجهمت شأو العشق في نشأة الصبى

تجهمت شأو العشق في نشأة الصبى

وما من صبىً فيها ولا عشق لا شأو

وما من صبىً فيها ولا عشق لا شأو

I grimly faced love's goal at the dawn of youth;

Yet within her there is no youth, no love, no goal.

وداء الهوى داء عضال لدى الورى

وداء الهوى داء عضال لدى الورى

وما نافع فيه المداواة لا سأو

وما نافع فيه المداواة لا سأو

And love's malady is an intractable disease among humankind;

Neither treatment nor resolve avails against it.

ونلت على قدر المنى رتب المنى

ونلت على قدر المنى رتب المنى

وما يستوي الولهان والفارغ الخلو

وما يستوي الولهان والفارغ الخلو

And I attained desire's ranks in proportion to desire;

The lovesick and those unoccupied and free of love are not alike.

وما قيدتني حالة دون حالة

وما قيدتني حالة دون حالة

فلا كدر في الحب عندي ولا صفو

فلا كدر في الحب عندي ولا صفو

And no state has bound me to the exclusion of another;

So in love, for me, there is neither turbidity nor clarity.

وأصبحت في أوج الحقيقة راقياً

وأصبحت في أوج الحقيقة راقياً

فلا طلب مني لشيء ولا رجو

فلا طلب مني لشيء ولا رجو

And I have risen to the zenith of reality;

So I seek nothing, nor do I hope.

ولا وحشة والكون إنس وبهجة

ولا وحشة والكون إنس وبهجة

يلذّ من الحادي لركبانه الحدو

يلذّ من الحادي لركبانه الحدو

And no loneliness: the cosmos is companionship and delight;

Sweet to his riders is the camel-driver's chant.

ولا سفر لا غربة لا إقامة

ولا سفر لا غربة لا إقامة

ولا حضر يوم اللقاء ولا بدو

ولا حضر يوم اللقاء ولا بدو

And no journey, no exile, no abiding;

Nor settled life on the day of meeting, nor nomadic life.

لقد شغلتنا الظاهرات بمن بها

لقد شغلتنا الظاهرات بمن بها

لنا ظاهر حتى استوى الجد واللهو

لنا ظاهر حتى استوى الجد واللهو

Outward forms have indeed absorbed us in the one who, through them,

Is manifest to us, until earnestness and play became alike.

ورقت غليظات الأمور وروقت

ورقت غليظات الأمور وروقت

كؤوس المعاني فالأماني لها تلو

كؤوس المعاني فالأماني لها تلو

And coarse things grew subtle, and clear became

The cups of meanings; wishes follow them.

فلا عجب إن طرت من رونق الهوى

فلا عجب إن طرت من رونق الهوى

وإن زج بي في نور غيبي فلا غرو

وإن زج بي في نور غيبي فلا غرو

So no wonder if love's radiance makes me fly;

And if I am thrust into the light of my unseen realm, no wonder.

وما الفخر إلا فخر مثلي على السوى

وما الفخر إلا فخر مثلي على السوى

وزهو مقامي في التجلي هو الزهو

وزهو مقامي في التجلي هو الزهو

And pride is only the pride of one like me over all else;

And the splendor of my station in manifestation is splendor indeed.

ولي نفَسٌ يعلو بغير تكلف

ولي نفَسٌ يعلو بغير تكلف

وغيري بتكليف له النفس الرَّبْوُ

وغيري بتكليف له النفس الرَّبْوُ

And mine is a breath that rises without strain;

While another's breath wheezes with exertion.

وبحر المنى رهواً تركناه للورى

وبحر المنى رهواً تركناه للورى

وما بحر عشقي عند خائضه رهو

وما بحر عشقي عند خائضه رهو

And we left the sea of wishes calm for humankind;

But the sea of my love is not calm to one who wades in it.

بدت نار ليلى والظلام ينيرها

بدت نار ليلى والظلام ينيرها

من الكون حتى زال عندي لها العشو

من الكون حتى زال عندي لها العشو

Layla's fire appeared, and darkness illuminated it

From the cosmos, until my sight of it was no longer dim.

وما كل ذي قلب ينال منالَنا

وما كل ذي قلب ينال منالَنا

من الغيب لكن كل بئر له دلو

من الغيب لكن كل بئر له دلو

Not everyone with a heart attains what we attain

Of the unseen; yet every well has its bucket.

هي الروضة الغناء أغنت بحسنها

هي الروضة الغناء أغنت بحسنها

عن الكل فيها عَرْعَرُ الغير والسَّرْوُ

عن الكل فيها عَرْعَرُ الغير والسَّرْوُ

She is the lush garden, whose beauty leaves no need

For anything else; in her are otherness's juniper and cypress.

وأغصانها منها تدلت كرامة

وأغصانها منها تدلت كرامة

علينا وقد طاب التناول والعطو

علينا وقد طاب التناول والعطو

And her branches hung down from her as a gracious gift

Upon us; sweet indeed were the plucking and the reaching.

هي الجنة الفردوس والقلب بابها

هي الجنة الفردوس والقلب بابها

ومن جاءها من نفسه صده العمو

ومن جاءها من نفسه صده العمو

She is the Garden, Paradise, and the heart is her gate;

And blindness bars whoever comes to her from his own self.

ولا جهل والعلم اللدنّي شعارها

ولا جهل والعلم اللدنّي شعارها

ولا ذنب إذ منها التجاوز والعفو

ولا ذنب إذ منها التجاوز والعفو

No ignorance: divinely bestowed knowledge is her emblem;

And no sin, for from her come forbearance and pardon.

تعلَّقها قلبي فأوردت الردى

تعلَّقها قلبي فأوردت الردى

لنفسي فأفنت والهوى للردى صنو

لنفسي فأفنت والهوى للردى صنو

My heart clung to her, and she brought death

To my self, thus annihilating it; love is death's twin.

فريدة حسن لم تزل أحدية

فريدة حسن لم تزل أحدية

وليس لها مثل وليس لها كفو

وليس لها مثل وليس لها كفو

Peerless in beauty, she has always been absolutely one;

She has no likeness, nor any equal.

علامتها محو النفوس إذا بدت

علامتها محو النفوس إذا بدت

وذلك محو للنفوس ولا محو

وذلك محو للنفوس ولا محو

Her sign is the effacement of selves when she appears;

And that is an effacement of selves, yet no effacement.

تجلت على العشاق نحو مرامهم

تجلت على العشاق نحو مرامهم

فلذَّ لهم في حبها ذلك النحو

فلذَّ لهم في حبها ذلك النحو

She revealed herself to lovers in keeping with their desire;

So that manner was sweet to them in their love for her.

ويسعى ويعدو كل شيء بأمرها

ويسعى ويعدو كل شيء بأمرها

إليها فيحلو منهمُ السعي والعدو

إليها فيحلو منهمُ السعي والعدو

And everything strives and runs at her command

Toward her; thus their striving and running become sweet.

وكنت وكانت حيث لا كان ههنا

وكنت وكانت حيث لا كان ههنا

ولكن على المعنى لها القهر والسطو

ولكن على المعنى لها القهر والسطو

And I was, and she was, where there was no 'was' here;

Yet over meaning she holds dominion and might.

تعالت كما شاءت بنا وتباركت

تعالت كما شاءت بنا وتباركت

فجلت عن الأفهام وانقطع الخطو

فجلت عن الأفهام وانقطع الخطو

She rose high through us as she willed, and abounded in blessing;

Thus she transcended understanding, and all steps ceased.
