    I am like a letter, subsisting through ink,

    through Being—the Real, the Generous, the Bountiful.

    بك نبدو وأنت بالمرصاد

    O Ink of all, we are letters;

    through You we appear, while You keep watch.

    ت فأنت الممد بالإيجاد

    And thus, 'We sustain each one,' You said to us;

    عنك كم في مثنى وفي آحاد

    You have not changed as we appeared

    from You, so many, in pairs and singly.

    أنت حق باق بغير نفاد

    Nonbeing are we all, and Being

    are You: real, abiding, inexhaustible.

    You are absolute, as You were from eternity,

    beyond the ranks of numbers.

    And we are all limitations, yet

    we have been related to You by ascription.

    For You are the One who ordains among us

    whatever You will, of hills and hollows.

    Our manifestation is truly Your manifestation,

    O Being of all, my statement is founded

    And if you say, 'Our Lord brings into being

    the nonexistent,' we say, 'This claim is sheer obstinacy.'

    We too say this, just as you do—

    a true statement, without hesitation.

    Not ascribing existence to a nonexistent

    thing, nor its receiving existence, is what I intend.

    For overturning realities, all have said,

    is impossible in the judgment of sound minds.

    Whoever is with Him sees me as light,

    while whoever is with you sees me and turns hostile.

    And darkness overcomes him, until

    his heart strikes fire with the fire-striker.

    فاستعدوا بواحد للمعاد

    Fire is but the toil of one bereft of light;

    so prepare, through the One, for the final return.
