أنا المعروفُ لي بالله ألوانُ

فرحمنٌ وشيطانٌ وإنسانُ

I am known to God in many hues

Merciful, devilish, and human too

لقوم ذا وقوم ذا وقوم ذا

على مقدار ما تنويه إخوان

To some people thus, and others so

Depending on the intentions of my brethren

ولا وصفٌ بدا لي قطُّ من ذاتي

ولا نعت ولا حال وشان

I have no intrinsic description whatsoever

No attribute, condition or state

ولكن كيفما قد كنت يا خلِّي

تراني فيك إشراك وإيمان

But however I may be, my friend

You see in me partnership and faith

تجلى بي على أهل الصفا ربي

فذكرٌ عندهم أتلَى وقرآن

My Lord was revealed to the sincere folk

A recitation and Qur’an when invoked

وقد شاء التجلي بي على قوم

لهم خبث وتكدير وحرمان

And He willed to reveal me to a people

Corrupt, troubled, and deprived

ومالي لا ولا للغير من صنع

وكل الصنع للمولى كما دانوا

I have no doing, nor does anyone

All doing is for the Master, as they profess

وقولي عند قوم محض تحقيق

وقوم عندهم ذا القول هذيان

To some my words are pure truth

While others think this speech is madness

وريح المسك لا يدريه مزكوم

وضوء الشمس غابت عنه عميان

The musk-scented breeze the clogged nose knows not

As do the blind miss the light of the sun

ويا من أنكروني إحذروا مني

فأرواح لكم راحت وأديان

O you who deny me, beware of me

For spirits have found rest and faith in me

وكفُّوا القولَ عن ذكري بتقبيحٍ

ورائي عصبةٌ في الله شجعان

Cease speaking ill of me, desist

Behind me stand allies, bold for God

ورائي كل ذي باع إذا مدت

فلا إنسٌ له تبقى ولا جان

Behind me all who sell when outstretched

No human or jinn remains

وأسياف صقيلات وأرماح

طويلات وضرّاب وطعّان

Swords polished, spears raised

Long, warriors striking and stabbing

هي الأطوار لي فيها مقامات

ولا يدري سوى من فيه عرفان

These are my stages wherein I have dwellings

None knows save those given gnosis

ألا يا قوم كم ذا العيش في جهل

أما فيكم لدين الحق إذعان

O people! How long this life in ignorance?

Is there no assent among you to the true religion?

لحاكم في فشار القوم قد شابت

وما تابت فآثام وعصيان

A ruler has greyed amid the common folk

Nor repented of sins and disobedience

ولما أسكرتكم خمرة الدنيا

عميتم عن تقى يوليه رحمان

And when the wine of this world intoxicated you

You were blinded to the reverent piety of the Merciful

فتقواكم ظنون في الورى ساءت

وتلبيسٌ على حقٍّ وبهتان

So your piety in the world was spoiled

Deceit upon the truth and falsehood

وعند الله هنتم والورى لما

رجال الله جهلاً عندكم هانوا

While in God’s eyes you are disgraced though the world

Deems the men of God as fools

إذا خفتم لباريكم فمن ذنب

يريكم فيَّ ذاك الذنب شيطان

If you fear your Lord, whose sin causes

Him to show you that sin but Satan?

وإن رمتم لشرع إن تقيموه

على مثلي لكم قد قام ميزان

If you aim to implement His Law justly

For the likes of me a balance has arisen

وأنتم في هواكم كيفما شئتم

فعلتم بينكم زور وأدهان

While you in your passion do as you please

Falsehood, fraud, and hypocrisy between you

حقوق العبد من أدنى معاصيكم

ومنكم في حقوق الله طغيان

A believer’s rights are violated easier than

Your gravest sins against God’s rights

أبحتم عرض من لم يرض ما أنتم

عليه من نفاق فهو خسران

You make public the honor of whoever does not agree

To the hypocrisy you live by, so he fails

وزخرفتم مقالات بها انغرّت

كهولٌ في مَذَمّاتي وشبان

You adorned your sayings by which ancient men were duped

With insults against me, and youths

أجار الله من وسواسكم قلبي

ومني وقيت عن ذاك آذان

May God protect my heart from your goading

And protect me from hearkening to this
