    Be gone, O self, O ill-composed one!

O barrier between me and my beloved!

O cloud that veiled the sun's radiance from

The eye of witnessing, and drove my nearness far away.

Oh, would that I had not been veiled by you,

In black garb, pitch-dark with otherness.

You are the one who weighed me down and barred me

From winning a share of the heights.

Though you are the flashing lightning from the sanctuary,

Yet your rigidity makes my Arabic speech unintelligible.

For I am the dense one, and the one I passionately love

Is that subtle one above you: he is my beloved.

A body I am afflicted with, dull and dark,

Under the sway of a nature driving toward the blaze.

Within it arose a soul whose ignorance grew complete,

And so she lacked cultivation and discipline.

So both it and she, when she refused

Right guidance, were like a monk's church with a cross.

But for providence, she would have remained like this:

Fit for blame and deserving of rebuke.

But God lit the lamp of guidance

Within her, through an opening onto the unseen, close at hand.

And turned her into a sun whose light shines forth,

    After rigidity, through swift transformation.

And the spirit, from God's command, is like a star:

Light crept from it without any creeping motion.

A noble spirit whose rule is harmonious

Within us, through varied forms of refinement.

And it is what tells us news of the sanctuary,

And a breath of fragrance from it wafts within us.

So I am the one who appears like a flash of lightning,

From the unseen of God's command, in due order.

And I am the one who has become a manifest spirit

In every bodily form, asking and answering.

Forever I yearn for the reality of my origin,

From within myself, with a heart turning back in perfection.

And the command is God's command; none besides Him has

Any share in that, O you who are brought near.
