You have wearied yourself with solemnity; desist.

And play as youth plays, and sway.

Beauty, whose crown you wear, leaves you no need

For the awe of al-Saffah and Alexander.

Why do I see you—though I knew you carefree—

Bewildered, pacing with a thinker's gait?

An air of awe from the marks of grandeur cloaks you,

Like a gazelle frolicking in a lion's hide.

Is your talk serious, or are you perhaps jesting,

    Playing at composure and scoffing?

And when a youth's heart has never known cares,

He thinks cares beautiful to behold.

Have mercy on your companion, whom you have clothed

In the robe of gloom in your presence, as one forced to wear it.

Suppose he follows you in gloom—who can give him

The beauty in you, whether you unveil your face or not?

Or if the water of cheer ebbs from him, who can give him

A spring of cheer gushing forth in youth?

Unjustly you inflict upon the features of his face

The distortion of a scowl atop a hideous distortion.

How strange that one envied for his grace should envy

Those felled by calamities for a burdened man's gravity!

You made sorrows dear to me when you fashioned them

As ornaments upon this radiant brow.

So leave experience—its coal and its dust—

To the owners of its mines, and win the gem.

And deceive your companion with a frown, for I—

I am not fooled by a laughing man in disguise.

Never will Nature bestow upon you a touch

Of the feigned solemnity you seek.

You are her smiling mouths, and in you she shines forth

To people, laughing, as though she had never grown clouded.

When Nature's mouth laughs, she has

No laughter but the radiant, blooming face.

And it is strange to see a grim scowl

On laughter, and a star grow dark without being veiled.

Tell beauty she may claim whatever she will,

Except solemnity, for that is not attainable.
