To you I dedicate my raptures and sorrows—

if only you knew what I conceal and what I proclaim!

Verse whose every rhyme is for your beauty,

yet it contains only part of my feelings.

It is offered to you, yet you did not discern its call,

as though it were an offering to idols.

And had I turned with my praise toward an idol,

then the sincerity of my faith would have cooled my breast,

and my liver would have been relieved of the fire—the fire of longing—

by my knowledge that you were not unaware of my offering.

But you knew nothing of my whispered prayer—oh, how glad I would be

if I won from you a refusal given knowingly!

O you who are all people in my eyes, however many they may be,

indeed, I single out every person with my verse.

    فاقبل، فإنك بعض الناس ديواني

    I offer the people what I intend for you alone;

so accept my collected poems, for you are one of the people.
