She shone from the palace's wings like Venus,

Appearing secretly at the horizon's edge,

In a wrap enfolding a body clearer than

Crystal, and softer than freshly gathered roses.

She strolled, and the wind tossed out from her

Hair like a ray of summer's late-afternoon sun.

Then she called in a soft voice, resembling

The lyre in sustained tones, and the oud in plucked notes.

She provided her mother with a silken shawl

That, like air, wards off none of the sun's heat.

She sent it to her; had she hung it

Above the fringes of her hair, it would have been more fitting,

And shielded her from a sun; had she spread her hair

Over the palace heights, noon would have become dawn.

Or, do you think, had she addressed her sister the sun,

Would the sun have disobeyed a command of hers?
