She saw his lips, while weeping stirred her,

And nothing alarmed her but the pallor upon them.

And she felt a hand that had been a girdle around her waist,

But felt in it neither a flicker of life nor blood.

And she bent toward his ears, until it was as though he

Were indeed hearing her lament and her regret.

And she opens his eyelids to see within them

Two lamps that once shone, but have gone dark—

Two lamps that used to reveal to her gaze

The beauty of her face, but blindness veiled them.

    فقد فجع الموت المحاسن فيهما

    And they had been the loveliest beholders of beauty's face;

For death has bereaved beauty of them.

Then she said, “Against my will, you are dead today,

    And the forenoon still smiles.

    Ah, Love, after him you

Will become a sickening malady within the breast.

You will be watched by jealousy wherever you go,

With an eye that shows you illusion as truth embodied.

You will come, praised at first and pleasant to taste,

And depart, ill-omened in your outcomes, bringing pain.

And you either fall short of your aim,

And grieve, or pass beyond it, grim-faced.

Your torment outweighs the serenity within you,

And your water mingles thirst's relief with thirst.

Yes, O Love, you will become a liar,

Obstinate, easily bored, cold, and fretful.

The breeze bears your flanks aloft as it passes,

And breaths fling you to every landing-place.

You go round—how sweet you are, O Love, as a cupbearer—

With a cup that deceives the skilled, discerning man.

With a cup whose edges are bliss and pleasure,

Yet it holds nothing but poisons and bitter colocynth.

You shatter the steadfast one's unyielding strength with heartache,

And strip him of flesh, leaving only cartilage and bones.

And breathe into the tongue-tied man's heart, and he steps forth

Eloquent, while the people's spokesman becomes mute.

And, O Love, you pardon many grave sins,

Yet nurse a grudge over a trifling fault, seeking grounds for blame.

And, O Love, you embolden the man who hobbles on a staff,

And he grows fierce, while you restrain the fierce, headlong man.

And you seize the rich man's wealth, and sometimes

Have granted hoards of wealth to one who was destitute.

    A madman's wildness and a fool's tenderness—

And alas for a lover's heart that suffers from them both!

And young men may show wisdom in youth's fresh bloom,

While the old man grows foolish through you if he becomes enamored,

Timid, though nothing he might meet is to be feared,

Rash, when fear would have been more prudent.

And you sometimes show mercy, though cruelty is in you,

And you are apt to be cruel and to show mercy.

And you are the most deceitful of things, if called fair,

And you are the hardest thing to master, if said to have yielded.

And if you wish, you urge the coward on, and he advances,

And whisper in the bold man's heart, and he draws back.

Ah, O wayward Love—ah, go forth!

Upon mankind as a sweeping torrent, or as Hell!

Ah, and separate a father from his child,

So if you are cruel, neither mother nor son shows tenderness.

And how many a conflict, O Love, you set ablaze,

And unleash it, raging, over earth and sky!

Ah, let the most wretched of mortals through his love be

The man most deserving of delight in it!”
