How can you find solace, when what would console the heart
amid its calamities is lost to it?

لهف نفسي عليك يا قلب يأبى
فيكwithin you إلاexcept الكمونlurking داءa malady وجيعpainful
فيك إلا الكمون داء وجيع
My soul grieves for you, O heart! It insists
on lurking within you, this painful malady.
عبراتٌtears برءُa cure for الجوىburning grief لوif أريقتthey were shed
عبراتٌ برءُ الجوى لو أريقت
وسمامٌand poison حتىuntil تراقthey are shed نقيعdeadly
وسمامٌ حتى تراق نقيع
Tears are a cure for burning grief, if shed,
and, until they flow, a deadly poison.
كمنتthey lay hidden فيكwithin you لاnot تفيضthey overflow ولاnor تبgrow cool (first part)
كمنت فيك لا تفيض ولا تب
ردgrow cool (completion) فالصدرso the breast منfrom شجاهاtheir anguish صديعrent
رد فالصدر من شجاها صديع
They have lain hidden within you, neither flowing nor growing
cool; the breast is rent by their anguish.

لو جرت في السحاب أجفل أو يأ
زمgrow narrow (completion) عنfor سبحهits swimming الفضاءthe expanse الوسيعvast
زم عن سبحه الفضاء الوسيع
Were they to flow in the clouds, the clouds would recoil, or
the vast expanse would grow too narrow for their sailing.
نضبdried up الدمعthe tears أمor مجاريهtheir channels سدّتwere blocked
نضب الدمع أم مجاريه سدّت
أمor فؤاديmy heart تامورهits lifeblood مقطوعcut off
أم فؤادي تاموره مقطوع
Have the tears dried up, or have their channels been blocked?
Or has my heart's lifeblood been cut off?
كلماwhenever رمتI sought فيwithin الجوانحthe ribs ماءًwater
كلما رمت في الجوانح ماءً
هاجsurged up للنارfor the fire بينهنّbetween them سطوعa blaze
هاج للنار بينهنّ سطوع
Whenever I seek water within my ribs,
a blaze of fire surges up between them.
منwhoever يذقtastes غصةthe choking of الشرابdrink فماbut no بيin me
من يذق غصة الشراب فما بي
غصةchoking pang غيرexcept أنthat تفيضflow الدموعthe tears
غصة غير أن تفيض الدموع
Others may choke on drink; my only
choking pang is the longing for tears to flow.
إنماonly الحزنgrief ريّضٌtame ماso long as استقىit drinks الدthe tears (first part)
إنما الحزن ريّضٌ ما استقى الد
معthe tears (completion) وأندىand the dewiest of الأحزانsorrows حزنa sorrow رضيعsuckling
مع وأندى الأحزان حزن رضيع
Grief is tame only so long as it drinks
tears; and the dewiest sorrow is infant sorrow.
يحرقburns الجمرُthe embers يابسَthe dry portion of الحطبfirewood الجزthick (first part)
يحرق الجمرُ يابسَ الحطب الجز
لthick (completion) ويأبىand refuses الحريقburning لدنٌtender wood مريعlush
ل ويأبى الحريق لدنٌ مريع
Embers burn dry, thick firewood,
but tender, lush wood refuses to burn.
فيكin you ياO حبlove كلall هذاthis فبعداًso away
فيك يا حب كل هذا فبعداً
لكwith you داءًa malady ترياقهits antidote ممنوعwithheld
لك داءً ترياقه ممنوع
All this is in you, O love—so away
with you, a malady whose antidote is withheld!
غمراتengulfing ordeals وخدعةand deception وجهادand struggle
غمرات وخدعة وجهاد
وسهادand sleeplessness وحسرةand regret وولوعand consuming passion
وسهاد وحسرة وولوع
Engulfing ordeals, deception, and struggle,
and sleeplessness, regret, and consuming passion.
