    وعلى صباك نصائحي وعظاتي

    My greeting and my life are devoted to you;

And to your youth, my counsels and admonitions.

You have been blessed with beautiful qualities,

Yet beauty in this world is among its afflictions.

It is a jewel whose gleam brings upon you

The aggression of thieves and the hatred of beggars.

Beauty is loved by the noble, yet it may

Incite the base of soul to strife.

Like the full moon, whose light guides travelers by night,

Yet also illuminates the haunts of suspicion.

So beware, for with beauty comes heedlessness,

And I see you feeling safe from the dangers of inattention.

And guard your beauty, for beauty is a trust

Belonging to God, which you tend until its appointed time.

And carry your youth into gray-haired age, untainted

By whatever sullies the pure white of its pages.

Beauty is a treasure in your hands, so protect it

From the covetous man's glance and the presumptuous one's gaze.

It befits one whose glance has wounded eyelids

Not to let his own eyelids seek refuge in slumber.

Have you not learned, lovely blossom that you are,

That flowers are prey to insects?

Do not let them deceive you with the softness of their words,

For softness is among the snares of serpents.

Beauty truly pains me when it falls

And falls back among devils and seducers.

The hardest hearts soften if they see

A gray dove, prey to old vultures and hawks.

So make your glances, whenever you aim them,

Stones to pelt the rebellious devil of souls.

And preserve your love as a pleasure and a joy

For those acquainted with pure pleasures.

You were made a comfort to the conscience and a joy,

And have risen beyond the reach of lust's cravings.
