Do they hear, save for the curlew's echo,

A voice fluttering in the second watch of night,

From any night-roamer in the dark, as though he were

A part of darkness, eluding both eyes?

He calls when night closes over him

In waves of darkness, with a drowning man's cry.

That he does not strike with the force of eagles?

    الخوف فيها والسَّطا سيان

    Indeed, life's merits are many;

Fear and force stand equal within it.

O reviver of the pitch-black night through vigil,

While the birds take shelter in their nests,

Who sings the stars onward, yet remains more hidden

Than a genius in the depths of oblivion,

Speak, O counterpart of geniuses when they are called,

While ignorance settles round them, its neck to the ground:

How many a cry of yours in darkness seems like

The beating of a breast tender toward the gloom!

These are languages; there are no languages but those

Through which the voice of feeling is raised.

If letters have not bound them, then they

Speak like revelation in every tongue.

The speech least in need of syllables and tongues

Is the sad one's outpouring and the glad one's joy.
