A loaf of bread, and a face

So sweet, and a cup of wine—

And that is the Garden of Eden

    In Khayyam's creed.

They say: one day he was called:

“All you desire is in your hands.

Give up just one of these desires,

And the other two are yours.”

So he wavered between a loaf—

Without it, he would starve to death—

    And a radiant face—

If it vanished, all would vanish—

    And a cup of wine

    That helps one bear misery.

    But for its beguiling hopes,

He would sober up, feeling cheated.

    Long he hesitated over them,

Then turned from them, stifling his anguish:

“I asked for an eternal paradise,

    Not for a hell.”

They say: then a voice called to him,

    Speaking without gentleness,

Like the voice of Iblis, were it not

For the sheer truth within it:

    “Is that an eternal paradise

    You rave about, O sage,

Which, if a single wish eludes it,

    Turns back into hell?”
