    O son of the caliphs of Marwan, you were begotten by the

    fair, mighty lords and the radiant, generous chiefs.

    كل البريةِ مهزوم

    You marshalled against the stone-pelted serpent a hoarse-roaring host;

    all creation is vanquished.

    As though its breaths were flame from its venom,

    so all it touched was bitten and savagely assailed.

    What is the stone-pelted serpent’s fortress

    to a mighty host for which the desert wastes grew too narrow?

    من كل أوبٍ له كالرعد هينومُ

    Like the sea, at its edges you hear a crashing;

    from every quarter comes its thunder-like murmur.

    As though between its two depths, having glided onward,

    a ship had foundered, with Romans in its belly.

    Praise be to God for him before whose onslaught the world bowed,

    and for him to whom supreme victory is allotted for all time.
