أَتاني مِنَ الأَنباءِ أَنَّ اِبنَ مالِكٍ

أَتاني مِنَ الأَنباءِ أَنَّ اِبنَ مالِكٍ

كَفى ثائِراً مِن قَومِهِ مَن تَغَّبَبا

كَفى ثائِراً مِن قَومِهِ مَن تَغَّبَبا

Word reached me that Ibn Mālik

News reached me that the son of Malik

sufficed as avenger for those of his people who stayed away.

Has sufficed as a rebel among his people, one who rose in revolt,

وَيَلقاكَ ما بَينَ الخَميسِ خُوَيلِدٌ

وَيَلقاكَ ما بَينَ الخَميسِ خُوَيلِدٌ

أَرى عَجَباً بَل قَتلُهُ كانَ أَعجَبا

أَرى عَجَباً بَل قَتلُهُ كانَ أَعجَبا

And Khuwaylid meets you amid the army—

And Khawilid will meet you between Thursday and Saturday,

I see a marvel; rather, slaying him was more marvelous.

I see it as a wonder, nay his killing was more wondrous,

فِدىً لَكَ أُمّي إِذ ظَفِرتَ بِقَتلِهِ

فِدىً لَكَ أُمّي إِذ ظَفِرتَ بِقَتلِهِ

وَأُقسِمُ أَبغي عَنكَ أُمّاً وَلا أَبا

وَأُقسِمُ أَبغي عَنكَ أُمّاً وَلا أَبا

My mother be your ransom, since you succeeded in slaying him;

My mother is ransom for you, when you succeeded in killing him,

and I swear I seek neither mother nor father in your place.

And I swear I prefer you over a mother or father,

فَمِثلُكَ أَدّى نُصرَةَ القَومِ عَنوَةً

فَمِثلُكَ أَدّى نُصرَةَ القَومِ عَنوَةً

وَمِثلُكَ أَعيا ذا السِلاحِ المُجَرَّبا

وَمِثلُكَ أَعيا ذا السِلاحِ المُجَرَّبا

For one like you rendered the tribe aid by force,

For the likes of you paid the debt of protecting the tribe by force,

and one like you left the battle-tested man-at-arms helpless.

And the likes of you tired the one experienced in arms.
