مِنّاfrom among us بِمَكَّةَin Mecca يَومَon the day of فَتحِthe conquest of مَحَمَّدٍMuhammad
مِنّا بِمَكَّةَ يَومَ فَتحِ مَحَمَّدٍ
أَلفٌa thousand تَسيلُflow بِهِwith it البِطاحُthe broad valleys مُسَوَّمُbearing insignia
أَلفٌ تَسيلُ بِهِ البِطاحُ مُسَوَّمُ
From among us in Mecca, on the day of Muhammad’s conquest,
From among us at Mecca, on the day of Muhammad's conquest,
were a thousand, marked for battle—the valley floors overflowed with them.
Were a thousand bearing insignia, with whom the broad valleys flowed.
نَصَرواthey aided الرَسولَthe Messenger وَشاهَدواand witnessed أَيّامَهُhis battle-days
نَصَروا الرَسولَ وَشاهَدوا أَيّامَهُ
وَشِعارُهُمand their battle cry يَومَon the day of اللِقاءِthe encounter مُقَدَّمُforemost
وَشِعارُهُم يَومَ اللِقاءِ مُقَدَّمُ
They aided the Messenger and witnessed his battle-days,
They aided the Messenger and witnessed his battle-days,
and their watchword on the day of encounter was “Forward!”
And their battle cry was foremost on the day of encounter.
فيin مَنزِلٍa place ثَبَتَتstood firm بِهِin it أَقدامُهُمtheir feet
في مَنزِلٍ ثَبَتَت بِهِ أَقدامُهُم
ضَنكٍcramped كَأَنَّas though الهامَthe skulls فيهِwithin it الحَنتَمُthe earthenware jars
ضَنكٍ كَأَنَّ الهامَ فيهِ الحَنتَمُ
At a station where their feet stood firm,
In a place where their feet stood firm,
cramped, as though the heads within it were earthen jars.
Cramped, where skulls were like earthenware jars.
جَرَّتdragged سَنابِكَهاits hooves بِنَجدٍthrough Najd قَبلَهاbefore it
جَرَّت سَنابِكَها بِنَجدٍ قَبلَها
حَتّىuntil اِستَقادَyielded لَهاto it الحِجازُthe Hijaz الأَدهَمُthe dark
حَتّى اِستَقادَ لَها الحِجازُ الأَدهَمُ
Their horses’ hooves had pounded across Najd before then,
The cavalry had dragged its hooves through Najd before then,
until the dark Hijaz submitted to them.
Until the dark Hijaz yielded to it.
اللَهُGod مَكَّنَهُsecured it لَهُfor him وَأَذَلَّهُand humbled it
اللَهُ مَكَّنَهُ لَهُ وَأَذَلَّهُ
حُكمُthe judgment of السُيوفِthe swords لَناfor us وَجَدٌّand good fortune مِزحَمُoverpowering
حُكمُ السُيوفِ لَنا وَجَدٌّ مِزحَمُ
God gave him mastery over it and humbled it;
God secured it for him, and it was humbled
the swords’ judgment is ours, with a resolve that thrusts through the press.
For us by the judgment of swords and overpowering fortune.
عَودُa seasoned veteran الرياسَةِof leadership شامِخٌheld high عِرنينُهُhis nose
عَودُ الرياسَةِ شامِخٌ عِرنينُهُ
مُتَطَلِّعٌseeking ثُغَرَopenings for المَكارِمِnoble deeds خِضرِمُboundlessly generous
مُتَطَلِّعٌ ثُغَرَ المَكارِمِ خِضرِمُ
Seasoned in command, with the bridge of his nose held high,
A veteran of leadership, his nose held high,
aspiring toward the frontier of noble deeds, munificent.
Seeking openings for noble deeds, boundlessly generous.
