فَإِن يُقتَل بَنو عُثمانَ فيها

فَإِن يُقتَل بَنو عُثمانَ فيها

فَهُم قَتَلوا المَوالي وَالصَميما

فَهُم قَتَلوا المَوالي وَالصَميما

For if the sons of Uthman are slain there,

If the sons of Uthman are killed therein

then they themselves slew the clients and the pure-born.

Then they killed the loyalists and the bosom friends

وَهُم قَتَلوا بَني الصَبّاحِ حَتّى

وَهُم قَتَلوا بَني الصَبّاحِ حَتّى

كَأَنَّ عَجوزَهُم كانَت عَقيما

كَأَنَّ عَجوزَهُم كانَت عَقيما

And they slew the sons of al-Sabbah until

And they killed the sons of Al Sabaah until

it was as though their aged mother had been barren.

It was as if their old woman had been barren

وَأَبقَت هَذِهِ الأَيّامُ مِنّا

وَأَبقَت هَذِهِ الأَيّامُ مِنّا

وَلَم تَرضَ لَنا إِلا كَريما

وَلَم تَرضَ لَنا إِلا كَريما

And these days have spared some of us,

And these days have left us

and accepted for us none but noble men:

And were not content with us except the generous

فَوارِسَ يَطعَنونَ الخَيلَ شَزراً

فَوارِسَ يَطعَنونَ الخَيلَ شَزراً

لَدى الهَيجا وَيَروونَ النَديما

لَدى الهَيجا وَيَروونَ النَديما

horsemen who spear the horses from the side

So the horsemen stab the horses fiercely

in the fray, and give the drinking companion his fill.
