كَماjust as كانَused to يَبغيهاhe seeks it كُلَيبٌKulayb بِظُلمِهِthrough his tyranny
كَما كانَ يَبغيها كُلَيبٌ بِظُلمِهِ
مِنof العِزَّsupremacy حَتّىuntil طاحَhe fell وَهوَwhile he قَتيلُهاslain by it
مِن العِزَّ حَتّى طاحَ وَهوَ قَتيلُها
As Kulaib, through his tyranny, sought
Just as Kulayb used to seek it through his tyranny:
supremacy—until he fell, slain by it—
supremacy—until he fell, slain by it—
عَلىover وائِلٍWa'il إِذwhen يُنزِلُhe lowers الكَلبَthe dog مائِحاًdrawing water from a well
عَلى وائِلٍ إِذ يُنزِلُ الكَلبَ مائِحاً
وَإِذand when يُمنَعُare denied الأَكلاءَthe pastures مِنهاfrom it حُلولُهاits inhabitants
وَإِذ يُمنَعُ الأَكلاءَ مِنها حُلولُها
over Wāʾil, when he sent the dog down to draw water,
over Wa'il, when he lowered the dog to draw water,
and when its very presence kept the grazing lands from it.
and when its inhabitants were denied its pastures.
بِكُلِّthroughout all الحِجازِthe Hijaz قَدindeed ضَرَبناwe attacked كَتيبَةًa battalion
بِكُلِّ الحِجازِ قَد ضَرَبنا كَتيبَةً
تُجاوِلُناbattles us عَنin defense of أَرضِهاits land وَنُجيلُهاand we drive it away
تُجاوِلُنا عَن أَرضِها وَنُجيلُها
Throughout the Hijaz, we struck a war-band
Throughout the Hijaz we have attacked a battalion,
that fought us in defense of its land and date-palms.
battling us in defense of its land, while we drive it away.
