    O Abu al-Atwal, you have drawn it out,

    and prolonging it does no good.

    You have consumption—no, by

    God, no consumptive recovers.

    But sometimes one lingers

    when there is a reprieve,

    بِهِ القُرحَةُ مَكحولُ

    as was the case when

    Makhul had an ulcer;

    and one day, baffled by al-Anbar

    and al-Qaysi, was Bahlul.

    And each had amassed wealth,

    with concerns and hopes of his own.

    So they became slaughtered prey for

    death; a ghoul had carried them off.

    ما عَن ذاكَ تَأجيلُ

    And you are the fourth to follow;

    there is no delaying that.

    And do not let your medicine's

    false, empty claims deceive you.

    I see signs in you,

    and things have their interpretation:

    ـكَ وَالمَسلولُ مَهزولُ

    wasting that has worn your body away—

    and a consumptive is wasted;

    فَمَوقوذٌ وَمَقتولُ

    and flies around you,

    some battered, some killed;

    فَأَنتَ الدَهرَ مَملولُ

    and fever in your bones,

    so you are forever fever-ridden;

    and signs besides that,

    which your trousers conceal.

    And if an elephant had even

    a tenth of what ails you, it would not survive.

    Is this the odor of the stomach,

    or is your molar decayed?

    And what is this on your mouth—

    thrush or boils?

    Or has the fever fallen in love with you,

    so these pustules are its kisses?

    And why has the one whispering to you

    turned away soaking wet?

    So if it came from within,

    then the Nile has flowed through you.

    And this is a disease that drives you onward,

    so no more talk or chatter.

    And if you need my knowledge,

    then my medicine is freely offered to you.

    Take crushed colocynth,

    swallow it dry, after it has been sifted.
