O summer of my days and dawn of my life,

Be a blessing to me in the old age to come.

Delight my heart with bliss, and my eyes

With beauty in your radiant hours,

So that when you turn away from me and

My gray hair rises over my temples, I may live on memories,

And take pleasure in the time that is passing,

    Reading its most delightful pages.

Memory in old age is enough for me to bring back

The days of love and nights of youthful passion.

What will I have when you turn from me, like a flower

That wilts and leaves its lingering fragrance?

Then, when I breathe it in, I breathe a rich perfume.

I pass away, but the perfume remains after my death.

    The raptures of your days, O youth, are sweet;

How lovely they are among life's pleasures.

I have been intoxicated by youth, and I wish

Never to wake, all my life, from that intoxication.

    Youth is love's brother; when

The days of youth have passed, no beloved comes to meet me.

How beautiful the days of youth are, for they are

The summer of life, fragrant in its every breath:

Like a garden in its blossoms, a rose in

Its fragrance, and summer in its bursts of heat.

Its heat is like embers, yet

It is better than the cold that is to come.

No welcome to gray age, whose morning dawns

And wakes me from my sweet slumber.

The dark nights of youth are, to my eyes,

Dawn; and the dawn of gray age is like darkness.
