News of a battle reached me while my baggage lay with Jafnah,

through which the chief of Shibām gladdened my eye:

Duwaylah, when he led the steeds, grim-faced,

with tangled forelocks and bleeding hoof-frogs,

toward Taghlib, lean-bellied, their gums bleeding,

and driven headlong into the depths of every waterless waste.

Even the expert guide is bewildered in those barren wastes, as though

you might take a chameleon there for an ostrich chick.

He brought them at dawn to the clan of al-Arāqim; the longing

was to meet them, with war in all its fury.

Shabām was over them; his fortress lay before Mālik,

and killing them is not forbidden to us.

Then war ground her breast against the clans of al-Arāqim,

with an illustrious, valiant prince of Shibām.

They are no equal recompense for his father; rather,

the killing of base men soothed a noble soul.

A Taghlibi slave served at his camp,

betraying him treacherously at Dāt al-Sām.

Then he attained from them every aim he desired—

Duwaylah, while the kings stood firm.

Before me, he soothed the soul against those of al-Arāqim—

    ʿAdī, Zayd, al-Shalīl, and Lām.
