Love for you in my heart annuls its decrees.

And for its sake my eyelid pours forth tears.

And since my birth, my intoxication with it has never worn off,

Under its sway, gray-haired age and youthful prime are alike.

My life, for as long as it has endured, and my death belong to it,

And my resurrection, when the Trumpet is blown.

And I have a heart that has become the quarry of its passion,

Yet no snare draws it there, nor any trap.

I slew solace when I revived my burning anguish,

And confession has wiped away no stain in my state.

And one advising me to conceal it, when it stood clear through its proofs,

Is swept over by a spray of sorrow’s tears.

And I hope, in fulfilling my love for you, to keep faith:

Thus, a pledge without shortfall, and a bond without annulment.

And love is only that whose constancy stands on its own,

Its structure firmly joined within the breast, or deeply rooted.

If a course fails to run straight along its way,

I take a straight course, as the rook moves.

A glimpse of your radiance appeared to my inner self.

So bravo to a mind that did not take wing then—bravo!

I have kept lamenting for the return of that glimpse,

As gray doves mourn when their chick has left them.

    My hand is engaged with your favors, and my heart is occupied;

So from my thought comes weaving, and from my fingertips, copying.
