You called, and the finely formed, short-coated steeds answered you,

And every eagle bearing a tawny lion.

And in recognition there almost quivered with delight

For you the meeting of the two seas and the solitary peak.

To a king who never stretched the palm of his hand

Toward a hope without good fortune meeting him.

And a virgin among maiden conquests you deflowered,

Whose marriage bond is sealed only by battle's decree.

You paid her in brown spears on credit,

While her ready payment was in gleaming sword-edges.

And an impenetrable stronghold, whose approach none could find—

With a crushing blow that makes al-Ablaq the Peerless forgotten,

You poured cavalry upon it, surer of the way than sandgrouse,

Until its lofty peaks fell crashing down.

Then many a slender youth was offered by a slender lance,

And many a full-breasted maiden was led away by a sturdy steed.

At the head of the crimson army, as though he were

A perfect crescent, with the stars as his troops.

And the Samhari lances poured forth tears, as though they—

    Their points bloodied—were inflamed eyes.

Warriors: when they brandish their spears and don their mail,

Supple boughs sway above their pools.
