I have forsaken all the beautiful women,

I abandoned all the singing girls completely

And turned wholly away from my infatuation with them.

And stripped myself of attachment to them

ورفضت لذاتي فصرت لناصح

And I renounced my pleasures and became, to an adviser,

And I rejected pleasures for myself and so became

After my defiance, attentive and obedient.

After refusal, a listener and obedient

ونهى النهي قلبي فأقصر وارعوى

واعتاض بعد الكبرياء خشوعاً

واعتاض بعد الكبرياء خشوعاً

And prohibition restrained my heart, so it desisted and came to its senses,

The prohibition prohibited my heart so I became chaste and virtuous

And, after pride, took humility in its place.

And after arrogance, I took on humility

ورأيت رشدي واضحاً بعد العمى

ورأيت رشدي واضحاً بعد العمى

فنكصت عن غي الضلال رجوعاً

فنكصت عن غي الضلال رجوعاً

And I saw my right course clearly after blindness,

And I saw my integrity clearly after blindness

So I drew back from the folly of misguidance, turning back.

So I retreated from the ignorance of misguidance, in return

يا حسرة ساعاتها ما تنقضي

يا حسرة ساعاتها ما تنقضي

كيف النجاة وقد أسأت صنيعاً

كيف النجاة وقد أسأت صنيعاً

O regret, whose hours never end!

Oh what a waste those hours were, they will not pass

How can I be saved, when I have acted so badly?

How can there be salvation when I have done wrong
