ضلال به طيب الصبا قد أضعته
جمعتyou amassed بهthrough it الوفرwealth المشتتscattered للعرضfor display
جمعت به الوفر المشتت للعرض
A delusion through which you have squandered the sweetness of youth;
Straying in the prime of youth you have wasted it
Through it you amassed scattered wealth for display.
You have gathered with it scattered abundance for display
ضربتyou turned عنaway from الإيجابobligation صفحاًaside ولمand did not تخفfear
ضربت عن الإيجاب صفحاً ولم تخف
منof اللهGod فيon يومthe Day of القيامةResurrection والعرضand presentation before Him
من الله في يوم القيامة والعرض
You turned aside from obligation and did not fear
You have turned away from righteousness, disregarding
God on the Day of Resurrection and presentation before Him.
God's judgement on the Day of Reckoning and display
ضميركyour inward belief أنthat اللهGod ليسis not بعالمٍknowing
ضميرك أن الله ليس بعالمٍ
وفيand in علمهHis knowledge غيبthe unseen السمواتthe heavens والأرضand the earth
وفي علمه غيب السموات والأرض
Your inward belief is that God does not know,
Your conscience that God is not All-Knowing
Yet in His knowledge lies the unseen of the heavens and the earth.
And in His knowledge are the unseen heavens and earth
ضلالdelusion بهthrough it تبغيyou seek جهالةfolly سيئevil الظنونsuspicions
ضلال به تبغي جهالة سيئ الظنون
بإهمالby neglecting النوافلvoluntary devotions والفرضand obligatory duty
بإهمال النوافل والفرض
A delusion through which you seek the folly of one with evil suspicions,
Straying you seek ignorant evil suspicions
By neglecting voluntary devotions and obligatory duty.
By neglecting supererogatory and obligatory acts
ضحاكever laughing إلىuntil الآصالthe evening hours ماnot زلتyou ceased مسرعاًhastening
ضحاك إلى الآصال ما زلت مسرعاً
بأذيالwith the trailing skirts of طولduration الجهلignorance فيin الجدearnest striving والركضand running
بأذيال طول الجهل في الجد والركض
Ever laughing until the evening hours, you have kept hastening,
Laughing toward evils you still hasten
With the trailing skirts of prolonged ignorance, striving and running.
With the tails of ignorant length in earnestness and running
ضلوعكyour ribs كمhow often تطوىare folded علىaround خبثmalice نيةٍan intention
ضلوعك كم تطوى على خبث نيةٍ
أماdo you not تختشيfear منof مالكthe Master of البسطexpansion والقبضand contraction
أما تختشي من مالك البسط والقبض
How often your ribs close around a malicious intention!
How your ribs fold over wicked intention
Do you not fear the Master of expansion and contraction?
Do you not fear the Owner of extension and grasping?
ضميرan inner intent قبيحfoul فيamid قبيحfoul فعائلdeeds
ضمير قبيح في قبيح فعائل
علىto بعضهاsome of them قدmay يشهدbear witness الحالthe circumstances بالبعضِthrough others
على بعضها قد يشهد الحال بالبعضِ
A foul inner intent amid foul deeds;
An ugly conscience in an ugly doer
The circumstances may attest to some of them through others.
Upon some the state testifies to some
ضمينكyour surety فيin تمحيصpurification ماwhat قدalready جنيتهyou have committed it
ضمينك في تمحيص ما قد جنيته
بأنby the fact that تمنعbe deprived الأجفانُthe eyelids منof لذةِthe pleasure of الغمضclosing the eyes
بأن تمنع الأجفانُ من لذةِ الغمض
Your surety for purging what you have committed
Your resolute self in refining what you have reaped
Lies in the eyelids being deprived of the pleasure of closing.
By preventing the eyelids from the pleasure of blinking
