لَمّاwhen أَنthat رَأَيتُI saw بَنيthe sons of حُيَيٍّHuyayy
عَرَفتُI knew شَناءَتيmy hatred فيهِمtoward them وَوِتريand my unavenged wrong
When I saw the sons of Huyayy,
I knew my hatred for them and the wrong I had to avenge.
رَمَيتُهُمُI charged at them بِوَجزَةَon Wajzah إِذwhen تَواصَواthey urged one another
لِيَرمواso they would strike نَحرَهاher chest كَثَباًat close range وَنَحريand my chest
I charged at them on Wajzah when they urged one another
To strike her chest at close range, and mine.
إِذاwhenever نَفَذتُهُمI broke through them كَرَّتshe wheeled back عَلَيهِمagainst them
كَأَنَّas though فَلُوَّهاher foal فيهِمamong them وَبِكريand my firstborn
Whenever I broke through them, she wheeled back against them,
As though her foal and my firstborn were among them,
بِذاتِat Dhat الرِمثِal-Rimth إِذwhen خَفَضواthey lowered العَواليthe lances
كَأَنَّas though ظُباتِهاtheir points لَهَبانُa blaze of جَمرِembers
At Dhat al-Rimth, when they lowered their lances,
As though their points were a blaze of embers.
فَلَمso did not أَنكُلI recoil وَلَمand did not أَجبُنI lose courage وَلَكِنbut
يَمَمتُI made for بِهاon her أَباAbu صَخرِSakhr بنِson of عَمرِوAmr
Yet I did not recoil or lose courage; instead,
I made for Abu Sakhr ibn Amr on her.
شَكَكتُI pierced مَجامِعَthe meeting-points of الأَوصالِthe limbs مِنهُin him
بِنافذَةٍwith a piercing thrust عَلىamid دَهَشٍbewilderment وَذُعرِand dread
I pierced the meeting-points of his limbs
With a piercing thrust, amid bewilderment and dread.
تَرَكتُI left الرُمحَthe spear يَبرُقُgleaming فيin صَلاهُhis loins
كَأَنَّas though سِنانَهُits spearhead خُرطومُthe beak of نَسرِa vulture
I left the spear gleaming in his loins,
As though its spearhead were a vulture's beak.
فَإِنso if يَبرَأhe recovers فَلَمthen did not أَنفِثI breathe a charm عَلَيهِover him
وَإِنand if يَهلِكhe perishes فَذَلِكِthen that كانَwas قَدريmy intent
So if he recovers, I have breathed no healing charm over him;
And if he perishes, that was my intent.
