صَبَحناwe attacked at dawn بَرازَBaraz الرَوزِal-Ruz مِنّاfrom us بِغارَةًwith a raid
كَوِردِlike coming to water القَطاthe sandgrouse فيهاwithin it الوَشيجُthe spear-shafts المُقَوَّمُstraightened
We struck Baraz al-Ruz at dawn with a raid of our own,
We raided the garden of roses in the morning
Like sandgrouse flocking to water, with straightened spears in its midst.
Like the flower bud with twisted petals
وَمِلناand we turned عَلىagainst جابيtax collector of المَدينَةِthe city كَرَدمٍKardam
فَأَفلَتناso he escaped us فَوتَbeyond the reach of الأَسِنَّةِthe spearpoints كَرُدمِKardam
And we turned against Kardam, the city's tax collector;
And we filled up on the hill overlooking the city like a mound
Then Kardam escaped us, beyond the spearpoints' reach.
So we slipped away, escaped the clamor of tongues
وَنَجىand saved اِبنَthe son of وَرقاءَWarqa الرِياحِيَّal-Riyahi سابِحٌa swimming-gaited steed
شَديدُstrong مَناطِthe attachment point of القُصرَيَينِthe two lowest ribs عَثمُثُمُmassive and powerful
And a swimming-gaited steed saved Ibn Warqa al-Riyahi,
And the son of Warqah the wind-swift survived
Strong where the two lowest ribs attach, massive and powerful.
Forceful lord of the two castles, seasoned warrior
وَنَحنُand we شَفيناwe healed مِنagainst يَزيدَYazid صُدورَناour breasts
وَمِنand against خيلهhis cavalry وَصاحِبُand the man of الحَربِwar مِغشَمُa headlong attacker
And we healed our breasts by taking vengeance on Yazid,
And we quenched from Yazid the thirst of our hearts
And on his cavalry; and the warrior attacks headlong.
And from his cavalry, though the lord of war is headstrong
