إِنّيindeed, I هَزِئَتٌّI scoffed مِنat أُمِّUmm (mother of) الغَمرِal-Ghamr إِذwhen هَزِئَتshe scoffed
بِشَيبِat the gray hair of رَأسيmy head وَماand there is no بِالشَيبِin gray hair مِنany عارِdisgrace
Indeed, I scoffed at Umm al-Ghamr when she scoffed
I was mocked by the mother of calamities when she mocked
at the gray hair of my head; yet there is no disgrace in gray hair.
The gray hair on my head, yet gray hair is no disgrace
ماnot شَقوَةُwretchedness of المَرءِa man بِالإِقتارِin poverty يُفتَرُهُweakens him
وَلاnor سَعادَتُهُhis happiness يَوماًever بِإِكثارِin amassing wealth
A man's wretchedness is not in poverty that weakens him,
A man's misery is not from poverty that disgraces him
nor is his happiness ever in amassing wealth.
Nor is his happiness ever from abundant wealth
إِنَّindeed الشَقِيَّthe wretched one الَّذيthe one who فيin النارِthe Fire مَنزِلُهُhis dwelling
وَالفَوزُand triumph فَوزُtriumph of الَّذيthe one who يَنجوescapes مِنَfrom النارِthe Fire
Indeed, the wretched one is he whose dwelling is in the Fire,
Indeed wretched is he whose abode is the Fire
and triumph is the triumph of whoever escapes the Fire.
And triumph belongs to him who is saved from the Fire

I seek refuge in God from anything that makes attractive to me
I seek refuge in God from a matter that makes alluring to me
my clan's reproach, or brings me close to disgrace,
The blame of my clan or that brings me closer to disgrace
وَخَيرِand the good of دُنياthis world يُنَسّيmakes one forget شَرَّthe evil of آخِرَةٍthe hereafter

and from worldly good that makes me forget the evil of the hereafter.
The best of worldly life makes one forget the evil of the Hereafter
And the Almighty will tell me of my deeds.
And soon the Almighty will inform me of my chronicles

I do not approach the house, crawling from its rear,
I do not favor the front room of the house over its back room
nor do I break my fingernails against my paternal cousin.
Nor will I clip the fingernails of my cousin's son
I watch them
فَقَدthen indeed يَرىsees اللَهGod حالَthe state of المُدلَجِone setting out at night الساريtraveling by night
If God conceals the eyes I watch for,
Lest God obstruct the sights I monitor
then God surely sees the state of one setting out and traveling by night.
For God may see the state of one hiding in the dark
