ياO لِلرِجالِmen, to the rescue لِطارِقِagainst the night visitor of الأَحزانِsorrows
وَلِعامِرِand against 'Amir بنِson of طُفَيلٍTufayl الوَسنانِthe drowsy one
O men, help against the night visitor of sorrows,
O you who brings sorrow to men, Tariq,
and against drowsy 'Amir ibn Tufayl!
And you, mature Wassnan, son of Tufayl,
كانَتwas إِتاوَةُtribute قَومِهِhis people's لِمُحَرِّقٍfor Muharriq
زَمَنالًfor a time وَصارَتand became بَعدُafterward لِلنُعمانِfor al-Nu'man
His people's tribute went to Muharriq
His tribe's leadership was once for Muharraq
for a time, then afterward to al-Nu'man.
Then later it became Nu'man's to avail,
عَدَّhe counted القَوارِسَthe horsemen (probable intended reading) مِنfrom هَوازِنَHawazin كُلِّهاall of it
فَخراًas a boast عَلَيَّover me وَجِئتُand I came بِالدَيّانِwith al-Dayyan
He counted the horsemen from all of Hawazin
I counted all the ships of Hawazin
as a boast over me, while I brought forward al-Dayyan.
As greater than me, so I came with a bail,
فَإِذاand behold لِيَmine الشَرَفُhonor المَتينُfirmly established بِوالِدٍthrough a father
ضَخمِvast in الدَسيعَةِbounty زانَنيhe ennobled me وَنَمانيand gave me my lineage
And behold, mine is unshakable honor through a father
Now I have the firm, noble lineage through my father
of vast bounty, who ennobled me and gave me my lineage.
Who begot me, of mighty Dasa'a, it did not fail,
ياO عامِ'Amir (shortened address) إِنَّكَindeed you فارِسٌa horseman ذوpossessing مَنعَةٍmight
غَضُّfresh in الشَبابِyouth أَخوa man of نَدىًgenerosity وَقِيانِand singing-girls
O 'Amir, you are indeed a horseman of might,
O Uncle, you are a horseman of might
fresh in youth, a man of generosity and singing-girls.
Whose youth rivals Nada and Qayan the hale,
وَاِعلَمand know بِأَنَّكَthat you ياO اِبنَson of فارِسِthe rider of قُرزُلٍQurzul
دونَbelow الَّذيthat which تَسعىyou strive لَهُfor it وَتُدانيand seek to approach
And know, O son of Qurzul's rider, that you are
And know, son of the horseman Qurzul,
below what you strive for and seek to approach.
You fall short of whom you strive for and hail,
لَيسَتare not فَوارِسُthe horsemen of عامِرٍ'Amir بِمُقِرَّةٍconceding
لَكَto you بِالفَضيلَةِsuperiority فيamong بَنيthe sons of غَيلانِGhaylan
The horsemen of 'Amir do not concede
The horsemen of Aamir are not pleased
superiority to you among the sons of Ghaylan.
With you excelling them, among Ghailan's tale,
فَإِذاso when لَقيتَyou meet بَنيthe sons of الحماسِal-Hamas وَمالِكٍand Malik
وَبَنيand the sons of الضِبابِal-Dibab وَحَيِّand the clan of آلِthe house of قَنانِQanan
So when you meet the sons of al-Hamas and Malik,
So if you meet the brave Hammas and Malik
and the sons of al-Dibab and the clan of the house of Qanan,
And Banu Dibab and the family of Qanan the pale,
فَاِسأَلthen ask عَنِabout الرِجلِthe man المُنَوِّهِbringing renown بِاِسمِهِto his name
وَالدافِعِand who drives away الأَعداءَthe enemies عَنfrom نَجرانِNajran
then ask about the man who brings renown to his name,
Ask about the man whose name is renowned
and who drives the enemies away from Najran.
Who drove the enemies away from Najran the frail,
يُعطىhe is given المَقادَةَcommand فيamong فَوارِسِthe horsemen of قَومِهِhis people
كَرَماًfor nobility لَعَمرُكَby your life وَالكَريمُand the noble man يَِمانِYemeni
He is given command among his people's horsemen
Al-Maqadas is given, among his tribe's horsemen,
for his nobility, by your life—and the noble man is Yemeni.
Generosity - by your life! And magnanimity prevails in Yemen.
