أُمَيَّUmayy ياO اِبنَson of الأَسكَرِal-Askar بنِson of مُدلِجِMudlij
لاdo not تَجعَلَنyou make (emphatic) هَوازِناًHawazin كَمَذحِجِlike Madhhij
Umayy, O son of al-Askar son of Mudlij,
O mother, O son of wine-imbiber, son of Mudlij,
Do not put Hawazin on a par with Madhhij.
Do not let Hawazin be like Madhij,
إِنَّكَindeed you إِنif تَلهُجyou persist بِأَمرٍin a matter تَلحَجِyou become entangled
ماnot النَبعُthe nabʿ tree فيin مَغرِسِهِits growing place كَالعَوسَجِlike the boxthorn
Indeed, if you persist in a matter, you will become entangled.
If you persist in something confusing,
The nabʿ tree, where it grows, is not like the boxthorn,
A spring is not in its bedrock like 'awsaj,
وَلاand not الصَريحُthe pure المَحضُthe unalloyed كَالمُمَزَّجِlike what is mixed
Nor is what is pure and unalloyed like what is mixed.
Nor is pure clarity like something mixed,
