Lo, has news reached her that a resolute man's war-gear

is with me, and that I have tended the unruly mare?

And I cared for her until she wintered black as an Abyssinian woman,

as though she wore fine silk and a green mantle.

In summer we reserved our milch camels for her,

    four-toothed, full-grown, and six-toothed alike.

So she became like a billy-goat fed on autumn shoots, bounding whenever she leapt,

on nimble legs that outstrip the ones drawn back.

For the day of terror we prepare supple, ample mail,

smooth and gleaming, and a keen-edged blade, swift and biting.

Upon her we wear choice war-gear in every battle's strait,

when the dense host takes the field as a fivefold army.

Free yourself—may curses be far from you—from a sinner's claim

against our wealth: it must surely be divided into fifths.

When we cross a sandy tract and its fringes,

then we have a swift, engulfing deed in store.

Turn your chests away from us, sons of al-Nu'man,

or else you will raise your heads unwillingly.

Does every scoundrel among you and every baseborn wretch

reckon on raiding us, then plundering?

Listen, son of al-Mu'alla: you thought and supposed us

sailors who pay the toll-collectors tolls.

So if you send a spy eager to meet us,

the spy will find everyone seated around my tents.
