والليلand the night أنثىa female، والحقولُand the fields سريرُa bed
The sun is my bread, and the dust is silk.
The sun is my bread, the soil is silk
And night is a woman, and the fields are a bed.
And the night is feminine, the fields a bed
والحُلْمُand the dream أسطولٌa fleet يسافرtravels فيin الندىthe dew
خلفbehind الصباحِthe morning، ولاand no يعودُreturns سفيرُenvoy
And the dream is a fleet traveling through the dew,
Dreams are a fleet sailing in the dew
behind the morning, and no envoy returns.
Behind the dawn, no envoy returns
والسّلْمُand peace وجهٌa face فيin الشوارعِthe streets رائعٌsplendid
وبداخليand within me كلّall الحروبِthe wars تدورُrage
And peace is a splendid face in the streets,
Peace is a splendid face in the streets
and within me all the wars rage.
Yet inside me all wars spin
الجوعُhunger ينبتُsprouts فيin شقوقthe cracks of غرائزيmy instincts
فأقصُّso I cut off صوتthe voice of الجوعhunger حينwhen يثورُit rebels
Hunger sprouts in the cracks of my instincts,
Hunger sprouts in the cracks of my instincts
so I cut off hunger's voice when it rebels.
I silence its roar when it stirs
والبردand the cold يسريcourses فيin العروقِthe veins مُسيَّجاًfenced in
وطنيmy homeland، ويسريand courses فيin العروقthe veins سعيرُa blaze
And cold courses through the veins; fenced in is
Frost creeps, fencing off my veins,
my homeland, and a blaze courses through the veins.
My homeland, and fire creeps in my veins
والموتُand death يسرقُsteals كلٌevery يومٍday دمعةًa tear
حتىeven البكاءُweeping علىfor الفقيرthe poor person كثيرُtoo much
And death steals a tear every day.
Death steals a tear each day
Even weeping for the poor is too much.
That even mourning the poor is plentiful

O you for whose eyes I battle my disappointment,
O you whose eyes I fight my defeats
two years have passed, and the sail is blind.
Two years have passed, the sail torn
عامانtwo years مارفَّhas not fluttered الجناحthe wing فماso no لناfor us
أرضٌland نحطُّwe alight ولاnor سماءَsky نطيرُwe fly
For two years the wing has not fluttered; we have no
Two years of motionless wings,
land to alight upon, nor sky to fly in.
No land to alight, no sky to fly
عامانtwo years، أذبحُI slaughter فرخthe fledgling of حنجرتيmy throat لكيso that

For two years I have been slaughtering my throat's fledgling so that
Two years, I slaughter the chick of my throat
the captive might wake—yet no captive awakens.
So the captive awakens - but no captive stirs

Even the caravans have not returned with a bottle
Even the caravans returned without a vial
containing seeds of noble light.
Containing noble light seeds

لاno قمحَwheat فيin كفّيmy palm سواكِexcept you يُنيرُshines
What, then, shall I plant in the lands of my blood?
What then shall I sow in the land of my blood
No wheat in my palm shines but you.
No wheat in my palms but your light
فأناfor I لطعمto the taste of نخيلdate palms رفضكِyour refusal أنتميbelong
وأناand I بِرِقّيthrough my bondage فيin هواكِlove for you.. أميرُa prince
For I belong to the taste of your refusal's date palms,
For I belong to the taste of your rejecting palms
and through my bondage in loving you, I am a prince.
And I, with my banner, am yours to command
فقفيso stand علىon حدِّthe edge of البراءةinnocence غيمةًa cloud
وأناand I علىon حدِّthe edge of النزيفِbleeding أسيرُI walk
So stand on the edge of innocence as a cloud,
Stand at the edge of innocence, a cloud
and I walk on the edge of bleeding.
While I stand bleeding, captive

And I fashion you from my ashes into a planet
I shape you from my ashes into a planet
that becomes a homeland for all the weary.
A homeland for all the weary

فلربّماfor perhaps فلَّblunted الحديدthe iron ضميرُa conscience
O last bullet, do not surrender,
O last of bullets, do not surrender
for perhaps a conscience will blunt the iron.
Perhaps iron will gain a conscience

ويصفُّهاand arranges them للمتخمينfor the overfed جريرُJarir
Or perhaps Farazdaq will wash the dishes,
Or Ferdowsi will filter them
and Jarir will arrange them for the overfed.
And portray them to the bloated

Nations are sold on the sidewalk and bought,
Nations sold and purchased on the sidewalk
and palaces are raised with the price of blood.
Palaces built with blood money
ولربّماand perhaps تمسيbecomes الأمومةُmotherhood غُربةًexile
ويشيلُand bears غُربةَthe exile of جُنحهِits wing العصفورُthe sparrow
And perhaps motherhood will become exile,
And perhaps motherhood will become estrangement
and the sparrow will bear the exile of its wing.
And the estrangement lifted by the sparrow's wings
لكنَّbut شيئاًsomething ماunspecified سيسألُwill ask : منwho أناI؟
فأدورُso I turn ثمَّthen أدورُI turn ثمthen أدورُI turn
But something will ask: Who am I?
Yet something will ask: Who am I?
So I turn, then I turn, then I turn.
So I will spin, and spin, and spin

And I say to the thing that is within me:
And say to the thing inside me
Who are you, O my homeland? ... Abir rises.
Who are you, my homeland? Fragrance arises
