My body, because you are far away, O stirrer of my anguish,
My body yearns for you, my troubling delight,
is sick with love for you; it has not recovered—indeed, it has wasted away.
My heart is in love with you, yet knows no respite,

O you, whenever my reproachers chided me on your account,
O you at whose blame, though the blamers decry,
I made my excuse plain with the down flowing along your cheeks.
My plea but increases in flowing reply,

Or, in al-Muhadhdhab, may a lover be tormented—
Can passion so fervent find torture its due,
one with a tearful eye and streaming tears?
When eyes overflowing with tears wait on you?
