My time has turned against me since I grew gray, and now

Its familiar things are strange to me.

Whenever the soul recalls them, it yearns with longing,

And the eye’s tear ducts freely pour out tears.

Until a time came that makes the past seem fair,

And overwhelms me with regrets at its remembrance.

How then, when nothing remains in the cup I drink from

But a few draughts in its murky depths?

And in every vessel, the clear liquid comes first,

While every speck of dross settles at the end.
