This authority has indeed departed from its proper seat,

Indeed, this affair has shifted from its settled place,

and truth and falsehood have been mingled within it.

ودارت رحى الإسلام في غير قطبها

The millstone of Islam turns upon a pivot not its own,

And Islam's millstone has turned on a pivot not its own,

and through it the overreaching oppressor’s hand has stretched far.

فلا لوم في حث الكتائب نحوه

كرجل جراد في الضحى متواصل

كرجل جراد في الضحى متواصل

So there is no blame in urging the battalions against him,

So there is no blame in urging the battalions toward him,

like an unbroken swarm of locusts in the morning light.

Like an unbroken swarm of locusts in the forenoon.

على الهول جأشاً فائض الخير عادل

They circle one blessed in character, whose heart holds firm

They surround a man of blessed disposition, steadfast

amid terror—abounding in goodness, just.

Of heart in the face of terror, abounding in goodness, just.

تضئ سيوف العدل فيها وتنتحي

على كل رواغ عن الحق مائل

على كل رواغ عن الحق مائل

The swords of justice shine among them and bear down

The swords of justice gleam among them and bear down

upon every evasive one who swerves from the truth.

On every evasive man who strays from the truth.
