إذا احتفلوا زرق الثياب وسودها

I have seen people's garments at every mourning gathering,

I saw people's clothes at every funeral

when they assemble: blue garments and black ones.

When they celebrated, their clothes were blue and black

وإني على ملك لبستُ ملاءةً

وإني على ملك لبستُ ملاءةً

من الحزنِ ما يبلى الزمانُ جديدها

من الحزنِ ما يبلى الزمانُ جديدها

And indeed, for a king I have donned a cloak

Yet I wore the garment

of sorrow whose freshness time does not wear away.

Of grief that time cannot wear out or renew
