By God, a charming maiden whose loss bereaved me!

How far she was from defilement!

Glad tidings and news of death came together.

Oh, how close her funeral was to the wedding!

O Mulk, Time seized its chance,

and struck a heart that was not on its guard.

How many tears never dry, and how many

souls draw long sighs for you!

I shall weep for you as long as a collared dove laments,

under the darkness, wailing in the predawn gloom.

O Mulk, in me and in you there is a lesson,

and admonitions that make one at ease feel desolate.

    After our parting, never again

    can a seeker attain pleasure.
